Characters from the novel Shadowborn, the Dark Triad was a trio of Ahltrian (a wizard, a cleric, and a fighter) that survived the Heretical Wars. Believing themselves to be the last survivors of their organization, they reconvened following the end of the War and endeavored to summon Ebonbane back to the Prime Material Plane. They hoped to bind the fiend to their will and make it their slave. However, their conjuration was only half successful- Ebonbane became bound to the sword prison they constructed for it, but Ebonbane was not bound by their wills. Instead, it killed and reanimated them as ghouls and undead thralls to the fiend's will.[1]

Ebonbane called the Triad to go into Forenoon Abbey and look for Lysander Greylocks, a defector to the Great Kingdom of Avonleigh whom was formerly dominated by Ebonbane to fight in the Heretical Wars. The other monastics intervened, bringing the Triad to kill the lot of them and renimate them as ghoul slaves just as they had been. Following the incident, Ebonbade's sword prison was placed in the hands of Lysander. Ebonbane took control over Lysander's and used good relations with Kateri to lure her into a trap within her own home of Shadowborn Manor. Controlled by Ebonbane, Lysander struck down Kateri Shadowborn[2], though in death she willfully rose as a ghost to bind Ebonbane to the interior of Shadowborn Manor, now a domain in the Demiplane of Dread.[3] The year was 611 BC, fifteen years prior to the "current" timeline of the Shadowborn novel. The corrupted Forenoon Abbey, under the leadership of the Triad, was also eventually drawn into the Mists, placed in the Phantasmal Forest that later formed around the Manor.[4]

In 726 BC, a period of some fifteen years later, Alexi Shadowborn, son of Kateri Shadowborn, and his companions journeyed into the Land of Mists to avenge his mother's death. Two fo the Triad, the Ghoul Lord and the Vapir, were encountered and destroyed within the Abbey.[5] The final one wielded the sword Ebonbane and was destroyed within the actual manor at the same time the sword was broken.
