"We did not lack for speed. The Loathsome Consort had seen to that by limiting our baggage to little more than what his strange, bipedal porting creatures could manage. They were tireless, strong, frightful. A great secret indeed had been stolen from Her for with them we could push deep and seize greater knowledge still. But only in returning did we understand their full value. For the dead that they had left behind, slain by the spores that they exuded, and transformed into rich beds of mushrooms, alone kept us alive, as the Loathsome Consort had intended."

Description

The fungus golem is a magical animated construct and as such lacks the dread golem template. It is a mindless automaton that obeys in the most straightforward way possible the orders of its maker, drawing no conclusions and taking no initiative. The creature will not resort spontaneously to special actions such as tripping or disarming, but it may either be given a specific instruction to make one such attack or may be directed as necessary by a maker who is immediately at hand. When issuing instructions to the animate thing, its maker is wise to error on the side of simplicity. The creature is composed of of fungus, is fairly tough with the consistency of hard-rubber, and is fairly strong with the shape and size of a beefy humanoid. Damage dealt by its slam attack doesn't heal, the wounds festering. It has a poisonous breath weapon that delivers a dangerous stream of spores.

Construction

A fungus golem is grown of fungus. The typical successful maker of a fungus golem is at least a 7th level druid or, more rarely, cleric with the plant domain. A 11th level ranger could also conceivably be a fungus golemcrafter. The maker pours 4,000 gp (or its equivalent) into bringing his or her idea to "life". Of this total, x gp are spent fashioning the thing's body, which takes 1/x of month and a successful x check (DC x). The ultimate animation of the thing requires 240 XP from the caster and the casting of the following spells: control plant and plant growth.
