Dwelling within the Mists of Ravenloft, mist horrors are malevolent spirits of formerly living beings whose evil might make them darklord candidates but whose natures are judged by the Dark Powers as to not be worthy of holding their own domains. Instead, following the passing of their mortal lives, the spirits of these wretched beings pass into the mists and gain new existences as mist horrors^[1]. Any individual of the commonly encountered variety is typically limited to a bound physical area of the Mists in a mockery of true darklords. However, wandering mist horrors also exist, wandering freely in the Mists as they choose^[1][2].

Mist horrors are wretched beings that know they have been judged unworthy of true power and therefore feel spite towards those beings that have, although mist horrors also generalize their hatred toward other creatures more and more as time passes. Every mist horror has a limited form of telepathy, or more accurately telempathy, for which the mist horror can use to read the minds of its prey (primarily what the prey fears). A mist horror can also transmit emotions, either feelings of false calm to catch its prey off guard or feelings of fear to victimize and panic its prey^[1]. More rarely, a mist horror can issue limited verbal telepathic communications^[2], or, in the case of the wandering horror, implant a suggestion as per the spell of the same name^[1][2].

Insubstantial and comprised of mist and fog, mist horrors commonly appear to be of roughly humanoid in shape and human in size. However, they are able to emulate the shapes and sizes of virtually any living creature. For obvious reasons, they prefer the forms of beings their prey fear the most^[1][2].

Some scholars profess that mist horrors are the remnants of beings slain by mist golems^[2].
