The portune are one of the nine major Arak races.[1] These sagely fey are skilled alchemists[2] and the healers of the Arak[2]. Their universal skill in herbalism allows them to detect poison (like the spell) and concoct remedies to most diseases, poisons, or other similar afflictions[2]. They can even cast a small number of magical healing spells.[2][3] Portune also serve as clerks and lorekeepers.[4]
Like the other arak, the shee dwell within the Shadow Rift, where they make up about one percent of the population.[5]
Portune are also known variously as Turtle Folk[1], Asp Folk[1], or Hodge-Podgers[4].
Appearance
In their true forms, portune resemble diminutive humanoids with white hair, black skin, and moth wings[2][4]. Portune can assume the forms of a turtle, asp[2], or other reptiles of similar size[3] The portune can also use Alter Self as a spell-like ability.[3] Despite their transformation abilities, the portune do not have the Shapechanger Subtype[4]
Combat
With little ability for inclination towards violence, portune usually avoid or flee combat[4]. If forced into combat, the portune attack with very weak bites. Still, the wounds inflicted by a portune can never be relieved short of powerful magic like wish or the healing efforts of the portune that afflicted the wound.[2][4] However, the skills of the portune benefit all of the Arak, so the other breeds make sure to watch out for their portune kindred.[4] In times of war or other circumstances of concentrated Arak battle operations, portune use their healing abilities to keep the muryan fighting forces going[6].
Portune demonstrate a physical resiliency against weapons, save for those made of copper or of sufficient magical strength to harm them.[2][4] They also enjoy total invulnerability to heat and fire[2][3] as well as weapons made of wood[2] or stone[3].However, portune possess the universal shadow fey vulnerability to sunlight.[2][3]
Language
Portune speak the the language of all breeds of the Arak[2]. Their great enjoyment of word games spills over into knowing at least a smattering of vocabulary in twelve or greater languages.[2]
Advancement
Portune advance by character class, usually taking levels in expert, but there are a few bards or sorcerers as well.[7]
The Portune and the Faerie Courts
Portune are part of the Seelie Court[1]. When acting as diplomats, portune will often accompany shee by riding other shoulders in reptile form.[4]
The Portune and Mortals
The portune are reserved and elusive, often spending most of their time around mortal humanoids in animal form. Discovery of their identities usually results in portune fleeing the area, though they may stay if they feel absolute safety.[4] Despite their shyness, the portune wander all over the place searching for ways to improve their medical knowledge. They may from time to time even venture into mortal lands to learn about mortal medicine. If impressed by mortal healers, portune may bestow some of their knowledge to the mortals or on rarer occasions seek to make them into portunekin.[2]
