Created on the Plane of Shadow[1] from the strange shadowstuff that makes up that plane[2], the Regalia of Arak is a group of artifacts that belonged to Arak the Erlking prior to his death[1][3]. Following said death, the Nine Major Breeds of the Arak divided the objects among themselves[3], specifically with each leader of the Nine Breeds bearing one of the Regalia as gifts from Loht and Maeve. However, the Regalia demonstrate a strange tendency to become lost to the Arak and reappear in the lands of mortals, causing the Arak to search high and low for missing Regalia[3]. When brought together near the Obsidian Gate, the Regalia may be in a ritual to open the Gate and let Gwydion out[3]. Loht performed this ritual i 751 BC but Gwydion's complete escape was preventing by the closing of the Gate, thereby trapping Gwydion inside again.

Like many artifacts, the Regalia are immune to destruction through conventional means. However, enough exposure to sunlight over a string of ten days will destroy them[4]. In addition, bringing them to the Plane of Shadow causes a seepage of their shadowstuff, gradually removing their magical properties[2] and ultimately causing dissolution.[4].

Also like most artifacts, the Regalia all have curses, though only when used by entities that are not shadow fey. Each of the Regalia will cause its bearer to gradually become more and more insubstantial if not used daily. Enough time without use will cause the artifact's bearer to turn incorporeal and eventually even meet oblivion[2]. Moreover, the bearer of one of the Regalia becomes preoccupied with keeping the object near at hand, such than an obsessed distress to regain the Regalia should it be lost or stolen[2].
