The Symbol of the Wolf God, redrawn by Radaghast Kary

The Cult of the Wolf God worships the Wolf God. Consisting mainly of werewolves, it is the main faith in Verbrek and is headed by Alfred Timothy.[1] However, the Wolf God is worshipped elsewhere in the wild forests of the southwestern Core.[2] The heretic priestess Mother Fury has started brought together her own version of the cult, the Howling Clan, in Kartakass[3]. In addition, there are (unconfirmed) tales of werewolves in Darkon congregating atop the standing stones of the Darkonian Forest of Shadows to howl in worship of the Wolf God.[4]

Details

As one would expect, the Cult of the Wolf God is a savage and predatory one. The Wolf God's worship is marked by blood-soaked sacrificial ceremonies on the nights of the full moon. Wolves are seen as creatures most sacred, with other predators such as humans seen as hated rivals to be slain or prey to be fed upon. In the main, the Wolf's God Cult is not one to embrace the use of a favored weapons[5] or even civilization itself, for the faithful see themselves as the bane of civilization. Both the act of humanoid sacrifice and the act of hunting are seen as sacred actions. The Cult's doctrine is one of survival of the fittest, even among his own faithful. The strong among the Wolf God's Cult are called to cull out the weak such that wolf-kind may prosper.[6]

Though the Cult of the Wolf God has neither holy text nor formal religious creed, cult priests observe certain taboos. Injuries are to be hidden at all times, and they must not be marked by the stench associated with those creatures they would feast upon. Faithful worshipers of the Wolf God may build stone cairns decorated with blood and bones, but his Cult has no temples.[6]

History

The Cult of the Wolf God has its own creation myth that coincides with the Birth of the Wolf God directly from the Mists itself.[9]

Beyond myth, there is something of a history of the Wolf God's faith, though one Alfred Timothy would be loathe to admit. Before the time of Verbrek, the people of Arkandale made sacrifices to the Wolf God to appease his wrath in the face of roving wolf packs. After Alfred left his father to wander Arkandale, Alfred learned of the Wolf God and attempted to win its favor. Frustrated at his failure, Alfred hunted the Wolf God's faithful, attempting to wrestle the Wolf God's secrets from them and gorging upon them when he failed. After a particularly brutal rampage, Alfred was caugh in slumber by some townspeople, whom would have seen him hanged. A Vistani woman intervened, though this did not stop him from betraying and murdering her. Following this act of betrayal, Alfred Timothy received the cleric powers he so wanted, but he was cursed to become human whenever overcome with emotion. He became darklord of Verbrek[9], and that domain is today where the Wolf God's Cult is most influential. The year was 730 BC.

Eventually an upstart, Kartakan-born Loup-Garou named Mother Fury came to enough prominence to draw Alfred's attention. Her embrace of both the wolf and human sides marked her as both a heretic and a threat to Alfred Timothy, and he expelled her from Verbrek. She fled into Kartakass, where she established her own splinter cult, the Howling Clan. Harkon Lukas is now an ardent foe of Mother Fury and her clan.[10]
