The person that would become the Headless Horseman was once known as simply a mysterious hero known simply as the Horseman. He and his men came to the town of Tranquility to destroy the the hydra plaguing it. After the deed was done, the beast's killers won great respect and admiration from the townspeople. Although the Horsemen's men left with a slow trickle to return back to whence they came, the Horseman stayed around, eventually winning the love of Talitha van Hassen, the daughter of the most powerful local landowner.[1]

The above mentioned landowner, Eli van Hassen, soon came to hate the interloping Horseman. He put pressure upon his daughter to betray her lover and bear false witness against him. Afraid of being cast out and banished from her position of social privilege, she eventually gave in. With such accusation, Eli ordered the capture of the Horseman and brought him before a mob. One of Eli's men decapitated the Horseman and left his body in a crude grave in a bog.[1]

A week later, the Mists descended down upon Tranquility. Overnight, the villagers heard thundering hooves. In the morning, they found their crops flattened, the Grave of the Horseman torn open. Most notably, the van Hassen Family and their servants disappeared.[1]

Unknown to the townspeople, the van Hassens and their servants had been brought into a Shadowfell domain. Eli van Hassen's use of judicial murder to undo the Horseman was the seminal event that caused the domain of the Endless Road to form. Eli found that he could not leave the van Hassen Estates without triggering the wrath of the now Headless Horseman and his entourage. The van Hassens and their servants had become cursed to forever remain within the confines of their Estates so long as the Headless Horseman rode on the Endless Road that surrounded them.[1]
