Exethanter is an NPC from the 5th Edition module Curse of Strahd. He is a lich that resides in the Amber Temple after having discovered the secret of becoming a lich there. He reanimated many of the dead guardians as flameskulls and freely shared the dark knowledge contained within the Amber Temple. Strahd was one one of the beneficiaries of the Dark Gifts of the vestiges of the Temple. In the many years that followed, Exethanter's body and memory have started to fail, and he has forgotten his name and spell (save for cantrips).[1]
In Curse of Strahd
Exethanter lairs in area X27. He is not immediately hostile, asking player characters if he knows them. His memory can be returned with a Greater Restoration spell, in which case Exethanter tells them of most of the passwords for the doors of the temple. If a second casting of the spell is used, the lich offers to escort them through the temple. The Incants of Exethanter is the lich's spellbook.[2]
