Hornung is an outlander wild mage from and perhaps one of the foremost pioneers in the study of wild magic. He created several wild magic spells, including Hornung's Baneful Deflector before he disappeared while researching wildwind[1]. Strahd considers Hornung an "upstart",[2] seemingly indicating some knowledge of Hornung. Despite not being a wild mage himself, Strahd devised a reverse form of Hornung's baleful deflector, Strahd's Baneful Attractor, though he refuses to credit Hornung for inspiration[2]. Hornung hails originally from Toril, though the above spell mishap took him to a different world.[3].
