Lord Malkant Hilfin invites great thinkers to his home every 8 years for a mental contest. Selmar Callista was winning this contest, and the Dark Powers offered Hilfin a deal. If he killed Selmar, he'd never lose again. So he did, and also killed the other 5 participants. He was drawn into Ravenloft and his home became his domain. [1]
