Irka Borova is a sad little woman that never seems to be able to get ahead. She is a herbalist and something of a witch (she is able to make various concoctions and magic potions. She lives with her Aunt Ludmilla in a house named Verbena. Very few, if any, know that Verbena is a Ravenloft domain and that Irka is actually its darklord.[1]

Irka was once quite fond of a man named Milosz, but Milosz didn't seem to return her affection, or anybody else's for that matter. One day Irka met Alina (Lover of Milosz), who came in asking for a concoction to make herself attractive enough for the one she loved to love her back. Irka agreed, until she discovered that her would-be lover was Milosz. So Irka created the extract and gave it to Alina. It did help Milosz fall in love with her. They were to be married, but it also turns out Irka's brew was a slow-acting poison. Alina became ill and died. Sadly, Milosz' grief was so great that he rebuffed Irka's advances on him. In anger, she told him he was responsible. Soon after, he ended his life.[2]

Alina's brother overheard Irka and Milosz' argument, and he suspected she was responsible for the death of his sister and her would-be husband. He gathered a mob, and they chased Irka out of town. She fled, willing to sacrifice anything for escape. Running through a cloud of mist, she arrived at the residence of her Aunt Ludmilla. She had escaped and was safe from further retribution. However, this would come at the cost of freedom to leave her new home.[3]

Irka has set up shop in her aunt's house and refurnished it to serve as a herb shop. She also sells various potions, oils, and to those she knows well, poisons. Her desires are not great, to be recognized and acknowledged. However, her curse seems to bind her to mediocrity. For whenever she experiences a windfall, something comes along and reverses her good fortune. She cannot escape her shop, but this always occurs due to seemingly hum-drum reasons. Her greatest dread is to have her crimes discovered, thus she lives in constant anxiety.[4]
