Jonathan Ambrose is the leader of The Brotherhood of Broken Blades; he resides in the Ambrose Compound. he has a deep hatred for magic, but his adopted ward Elaine Clairn has developed the innate powers of a sorcerer. This has caused him no end of grief and inner conflict.[1]

Jonathan Ambrose and Elaine Clairn are major protagonists in the novel Death of a Darklord, and they were included in the Kartakass chapter of Ravenloft Gazetteer I.

Background

Jonathan Ambrose's hatred of magic originates in trauma. When he was ten, two brothers named Timon and Gamail came for a stay at the inn belonging to Jon's parents. Soon thereafter, a woman Ambrose knew only as the "red-haired witch" came to kill Timon. Before she killed Timon, the witch transformed Jon's mother into a house cat as a distraction for her true target. After failing to find a way to get Jon's mother turned back, Jon's father went after the red-haired witch and was subsequently killed. Jon's mother was later ran over by a cart.[2]

As he grew up, Jonathan became a wandering adventurer and vigilante most oriented toward wizard hunting.[3] Later he learned to work within the law, and he brought transgressors back for trial when possible[4]. As a mage-finder, Jon served under the command (and was a close friend) of Calum Songmaster[5]. His mage-finder partner and wife was Tereza Ambrose.[6]

Jon's views on magic began to change when he and Tereza adopted the Clairn twins, Elaine Clairn and Blaine Clairn, both with supernatural powers. Elaine especially opened Jon's mind and made him more accepting and tolerant of the unusual.[7]

As part of a Faustian pact he made with Harkon Lukas, Calum Songmaster lured Jon and his associates into a trap by calling for their help with the Zombie Plague of Cortton Lukas planned to hunt down all of the mage-finders one-by-one before pouncing on Konrad Burn, his real target, and exchanging bodies with him.[8]

The zombie plague was devastating for Jon and his mage-finders. In the ensuing chaos, both Blaine[9] and Tereza lost their lives, as well as least one adventurer, Averil Brilliantine, who was working with them.[10] Tereza rose as one of the zombies. She attacked Jon before being put to the torch by Gersalius.[11] Lukas was able to claim Konrad's body. Lukas' treachery remained essentially undetected[12]. However, the suspicions of Jonathan and his companions prevented Lukas from having things all his way with their total destruction.[13] The mage-finders discovered and rooted out Marland Ashe, the creator of the zombies[14], and Elaine Clairn purified the water supply he poisoned.[15]
