Lord Durven Graef is the darklord and ruler of Graefmotte. His cowardice ultimately led him to seeing his son die in front of him rather than losing him on the battle field.[1]

Background

Lord Durven Graef is a descendant of Phillip Graef, the man who founded the town some five centuries before it entered the Shadowfell.[1]

The formation of Graefmotte occurred in the context of the demon invasion that felled Nerath in the Points of Light implied setting for 4th Edition. Lord Durven Graef, the future darklord of Graefmotte the domain, was a noble lord of a stretch of Nerath's frontier. Graefmotte's cowardice made him disloyal to the crown, forbidding his son, Geoffrey Graef, to leave for war against the gnolls. Repeated arguments eventually escalated to physical fisticuffs, ending with the felling of Geoffrey. Lord Durven allowed his son to bleed out rather than lose him on the battlefield. Still driven mad by the experience, Darven's neglect let gnoll invaders break in and overwhelm the Village of Graefmotte. When Darven gathered his forces, the gnolls were driven away, but he was mortally wounded. the Mists came in and took Darven Graef and his people to the Shadowfell.[2]

Current Sketch

Lord Durven Graef still resides as ruler (and effective dictator) of Graefmotte. Unlike may darklords, Lord Graef keeps a watchful eye on the domain, seeing that everything that transpires.[1] He has been cursed with a form of immortality, thus forever prolonging his suffering in shame and grief.[3]

Lord Graef wields the magical weapon Graefling in combat. He also rides a warhorse named Gloom.[4] He resides within Graef Keep, where he is haunted by the ghosts of the dead.[5]
