Oppression is systematic, long-standing repression of the ruled by the ruler. The oppressor typically lives in some degree of fear of the oppressed who for their part wish for his or her removal. Hence there is the possibility of assassination, revolt, rebellion and even revolution. The typical response to these threats is to deal most graphically with even the slightest trace whatsoever of resistance. The people must be taught a fear that trumps their hatred and hence leaves them impotent.
