Ownership is the recognition by the state in law or of society by tradition of one's control of something or someone. What is controlled is said to be property.

Speculation

Some anthropologists trace the advent of the institution of property to the incest taboo, in that the exchanging and bartering of daughters is the birth of trade. Others believe that the notion of property derives simply from competition for scarce resources. In either case, in most known cultures, theft of property is itself taboo.

The transgression of this taboo by a person of consequence can have repercussions that go well beyond the integrity of property relations and of property itself in a given land. The destruction of the Kingdom of Rome and the birth of the Roman Republic were direct consequences of such a transgression. In the Land of Mists, Strahd von Zarovich furnishes a case in point.

The Count of Barovia attempted to steal for himself the "property" of his brother. As a consequence of this and related acts, the entirety of Barovia is now his property to a degree that exceeds that of any mundane king, but he is cursed to never take possession of Tatyana Federovna even as her reincarnations haunt him and his land. Unsurprisingly, Strahd conceives of many crimes in Barovia in terms of theft. A murder is theft from him of human resources, is robbery from his blood bank.

The curious property relations in Vechor are conceivably an expression of its less than well-balanced darklord.
