Queen Avarein is the darklord of the Kingdom of Fairhafen. She is also its queen by way of the death of King Drosselbart and the permanent incapacitation of his daughter Princess Rosenbriar, both of which she engineered. Queen Avarein is not the princess' mother, rather she is the king's second wife. She exploited his grief over the loss of his first wife in order to worm her way into the king's affections. After a short time, Avarein afflicted him with some kind of illness, from which he died. For a while, Queen Averein ruled unchallenged as Princess Rosenbriar's regent, but that would have changed once Princess Rosenbriar became old enough to rule herself. Before the Princess reach that age, she was badly injured in a seeming chariot accident that rendered her unconscious. The Queen put her into a crystal coffin that wards away harm to her, and through unknown means, the Queen has kept Princess Rosenbriar forever in stastis.[1]

Queen Avarein's curse is to be surrounded by people she hates but yet must depend on. Queen Avarein must keep Rosenbriar alive, for that is the source of her political rule. Count Lothar, the brother of the king, has plotted rebellion against Queen Avarein, but the Queen holds him in check by holding his son hostage. Queen Avarein even loathes her own obnoxious daughters Brunhild and Beatrix, but they enable her to use covey powers similar to a hag.[2]
