Item, magic item, artifact, or cursed magic item?

My vote is for magic item. It performs as advertised, hence not cursed IMO. Doesn't display any of the legendary powers of an artifact, either. DeepShadow 06:01, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

As to legendary powers, it does open a portal out of the demiplane, granted for only one and granted that that person becomes a devil as part of the process.Cure 07:01, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Granted, that makes it comparable to a scroll of return, which is an artifact. OTOH, one of the most distinctive features of an artifact is the difficulty in destroying. Does the Kyton Device need any special means to destroy it? DeepShadow 17:28, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Well, that is the thing. It seems to be an ordinary hunk of metal, which with the right series of ritual makes a devil of one and deposits one in Hell. Hence my uncertainty as to what to do with it. For on that basis it is an item!Cure 19:48, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

The text says "The kyton device is an artifact that comes from the third layer of Hell." Sounds good enough for me. Transcends the rules of the DP's, otherworldly origin, means of destruction ambiguous...that's two out of three, and the text calls it an artifact. DeepShadow 04:26, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Excellent.Cure 08:37, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
