The hopeful are members of the Ildi'Thaan that aspire to gain but do not currently possess psionic wild talents. Although theoretically equal in power with the echelon (those who have wild talents), the hopeful are in practice given less privileges and autonomy. The hopeful are not allowed inside Irkat Thaan.^[1]

The hopeful of the sash are those hopeful who have demonstrated their loyalty and value to the echelon of the Ildi'Thaan. This title arises from the ceremonial red sash which such hopeful are given to wear at ceremonies. They are entrusted with more secrets and more meaningful tasks than the other hopeful.^[1]

In addition, some of the hopeful attempt to develop their psionic potential and fail. These hopeful are granted ceremonial sashes with a black stripe. Because they lack psionic talents, they cannot join the echelon, but nonetheless they are accorded more respect and responsibility for their dedication.^[1] By implication, the hopeful of the sash are still attempting to develop their wild talents. Once the echelon decide that a hopeful of the sash does not possess psionic ability, that's when they become one of the hopeful of the black stripe.
