The Dark Powers

My darkpowers are the Semisentient Mist themselves, born from the conflict beetwen the gods in the age of Creation.

My dark powers are equals with the Serpent from Die Vecna, Die and the Lady of Pain. Basically the universe was reshaped by previous being managing to ascend to heights beyond our knowing, and left behind several "familiars" to do jobs for him. The thing is, the only one doing its job is the Lady of Pain. The Serpent is trying to gain the powers of its lost master via a catspaw, like vecna. Meanwhile, the Dark Powers are half-heartidly doing their job of making sure "unworthy" beings will never ascend, instead spending most of its time collecting things it finds "interesting".

I like that analogy. It would actually make sense (and be incredibly funny) if the Dark Powers were actually a bunch of intelligent cats, toying with their prey. Perhaps they released Lord Soth for literally not moving for years---my cat seems to lose track of things that are too frightened to move.
