So-called for its ability to control and create zombies, a Zombie Lord is a powerful undead creature that is marked by a foul aura of rot and decay. This aura can have any number of foul effects, anywhere from causing mere nausea to disease or even death (followed swiftly by reanimation as a normal zombie. In game mechanics, this effect is determined by a roll on a random table). Unlike normal zombies, zombie lords retain their intelligence and lack the normal sluggishness that impairs their weaker kin.[1][2]
As previously mentioned, zombie lords have almost supreme command over zombies[1], at least ones reanimated by "normal" means such as necromancy or negative energy. Nor does their control seem to preempt the control by more powerful sources such as darklords. For example, a zombie lord is not able to control yellow musk zombies or Strahd Zombies.[1][2] Zombie lords also have the power to cast animate dead and speak with dead.[1][2]
Canon sources say that zombie lords form from corpses targeted by raise dead spells gone wrong in Ravenloft.[1][2] Marcel Tarascon[3] is one such example. However, this does not account for the origins of canon zombie lords. Anton Misroi[4] and Coetlicrota the Undying[5] are two examples of how dark pacts, whether accidental or purposeful, can bring zombie lords to "life".
The Zombie Lord Template can be applied to humanoid or monstrous humanoid creatures.[2]
Zombie lords can be encountered in the following domains: Falkovnia[6]. As undead, they may be found in the domains of Barovia[7][8], Darkon[9][10], Har'Akir[11][12], Mordent[13][14], Sanguinia[15], Sithicus[16][17], Souragne [18], and Valachan[19][20] As a type of undead that does not feed, zombe lords may be encountered in Keening.[21][22]
