The powrie are one of the nine major Arak races.[1] On the whole, the powrie are sadistic, Chaotic Evil fey that partake in murder and torture for the sheer joy of it.[2][3] (So great is their enjoyment of spilling blood that they also known as redcaps due to their blood-soaked caps[1]- although they should not be confused with the equally murderous sylvan fey of the same name). Despite their wanton love for inflicting pain and death, the powrie nonetheless never break the Law of Arak by killing their fellow Arak[4], with a but single notable exception in the history of the Arak.

The powries' abilities for stealth and sabotage make them superb spies as well as professional murderers.[2][3] It should come as no surprise the powrie are part of the Unseelie Court[5]. Princess Malinda is their current leader[6]. Their previous leader, Jozell, was blamed for the murder of Tristessa and thus punished with the great exile of the Shunning.[7]

Like the other arak, the powrie dwell within the Shadow Rift, where they make up about seven percent of the population.[8] Beyond the Shadow Rift, powrie can be encountered in the following domains: Falkovnia[9] and Tepest[10]

Appearance

In their true forms, the powrie resemble twisted, bearded pixies or sprites, with reptilian eyes, insectile wings, and wild teeth.[2][3]

Powrie can assume the forms of any insect that stings (such as wasps, mosquitos, and the like)[2][3] The powrie can also use Alter Self as a spell-like ability.[3] Despite their transformation abilities, the sith do not have the Shapechanger Subtype[3]

Combat

Powries take to combat from the shadows, using a combination of guile, illusion, stealth, and every dirty trick imaginable to strike their foes or victims at their weakest. A powie strikes using its sharp teeth and with tiny daggers. A powrie's bite delivers a blinding poison, and it may also place other poisons on its daggers. Powrie have numerous special attacks at their command: a deafening shriek and a rictus grin so horrific it inspires fear.[2][3]

Beyond the above special attacks, powrie can use a number of special abilities that mimic those of character classes. Powrie may cast minor illusion spells of the Sorcerer/Wizard Spell List.[2][3] They also have a number of rogue abilities[3], the most notable being the ability to backstab or sneak attack.[2][3]

Powrie demonstrate a physical resiliency against weapons, save for those made of platinum or of sufficient magical strength to harm them.[2][3] They also enjoy total immunity to electricity and weapons made of steel.[2][3] However, powrie retain the universal shadow fey vulnerability to sunlight[2][11]

Language

In addition to the language of all breeds of the Arak[12], the powrie speak Sylvan.[3]

Advancement

Powrie advance by character class, with rogue as their favored class. Many take levels in the assassin or shadowdancer prestige classes.[13]

The Powrie and Mortals

Powries show little regard for mortal life, typically decorating their lairs with objects or body parts filched from their deceased victims. Although powrie take great joy in slaying mortals, powrie may transform especially vile or horrific mercenaries or scalawags into powriekin.[14]

Descriptive Text

"There was a buzzing, as if the King of Flies was there, and the sharp reek of blood even before we entered the room. Throwing open the door, we saw the thing crouched over its victim, knife in hand; a creature like a starved child with wasp wings. Dabbling its cap at Mistress Hartree's slit throat, it clapped it on its head and gave us a hangman's grin."

-Bertram Mac Laren, Sixty Nights in Tepest[15]
