A ship, as opposed to a boat, is a somewhat relative and impercise matter. In terms of size and cargo capacity, a ship is said to be able to carry a boat. Equally, watercraft operating on freshwater, or apt for such operation, are typically classified as boats. Barges and scow schooners are boats. Seaworthy craft such as galleon, carracks, and caravels are ships. The cog, a predecessor of the the caravel, would be one of the first ships.
