The Relentless

The Relentless is the lair of Captain Pieter van Riese. It is a ship, sailing the Sea of Sorrows and dates back to his final voyage on the Prime Material Plane. In Ravenloft, it is has a terrifying, incorporeal form, but Captain van Riese can mentally force it to assume a mundane, corporeal state.

At sea, Captain van Riese is the only one who crews the Relentless. Any sailors the captain has recruited disappear without a trace when the ship regains its normal, ghostly state.

The Relentless is a sinkhole of evil of rank 5 and possesses both the Rage and the Despair emotional taints. It is a temporal distortion, with the potential to land anywhere (and perhaps any when), but Captain van Riese cannot control his final destinations unless specifically chartered to visit a location. The temporal distortion of the Relentless can have unusual effects on whose who enlist as crew. Time spent on the ship may not actually match the objective time that has occurred outside of it.

Although the ship is ghostly object and as such, is always in the Ethereal Plane, the ship is always visible on the Material Plane. When land is not visible, it normally takes on its terrifying appearance as a ghost ship. However, when Captain van Riese wills it, the Relentless can exhibit a "corporeal manifestation". During this manifestation, the ship does not become solid on the Material Plane so much as draw those within 300 ft. of it into the Ethereal Plane. There, the full crew of the ship, both living and dead, are visible and can interact with exterior creatures and objects.
