A ship, as opposed to a boat, is a somewhat relative and impercise matter. In terms of size and cargo capacity, a ship is said to be able to carry a boat. Equally, watercraft operating on freshwater, or apt to such operation, are typically classified as boats. Barges and scow schooners are boats. Seaworthy craft such as the galleon, the fluyt, the carrack, and the caravel are ships.
