A ship, as opposed to a boat, is a somewhat relative and impercise matter. In terms of size and cargo capacity, a ship is said to be able to carry a boat. Equally, watercraft operating on freshwater, or apt for such operation, are typically classified as boats. Barges and scow schooners are boats. Seaworthy craft such as galleon, carracks, and caravels are ships.
