The Darkonians believe the dead have been banished to the Gray Realm, where they await the Hour of Ascension, when they will reclaim the land from the living. In reality, the Gray Realm is likely to be synonymous with the Near Ethereal.
The Myth of the Gray Realm
Darkonians tell a creation myth of Darkon that starts with the Gray Realm. In the beginning of time, Death and his Three Horsemen had power over the Gray Realm through its knowledge of life. The spirits of the people simply drifted around aimlessly as overseen by Death's grim reapers. However, Darkanos stole the secret of life from Death, and though he was struck down, live itself spread throughout the land, making Death retreat and forming the land of Darkon[1]
