Atheism is the absence of belief in the gods as opposed to religion which is the presence of faith in the gods. Atheism questions not only the supposed intentions of gods but also their alleged existence. Atheism, moreover, calls into question and raises doubts about an institution. It challenges the way of being of the faithful and of the peoples of whole lands. It challenges the way of being of societies and of their understanding of themselves as children of the gods. To declare oneself an atheist in Nova Vaasa or G'Henna is to question both the authority of its leaders and the legitimacy of the social order. That is the sort of act that can lead to a gruesome death or worse.
