The City Guard of Paridon is headquartered on Bell Street in the middle class district of East Side, having moved in 742 or 743 BC from a smaller location on Westminister Street in the West End. It is abutted by the Coronial Office. Three or more smaller guard stations are scattered about the city. The City Guard consists of constables and inspectors. It is led by a Chief Constable.

The City Guard was shaken to its core in 742 BC during the 13th murder cycle of Bloody Jack with the exposure of the then-chief constable as being a doppelganger working with Sir Edmund Bloodsworth. A massive investigation and reform of the guard followed. The position of chief constable was held by James Wortle as the 14th murder cycle began in 755 BC. He was the fifth chief constable in 13 years. Wortle was recognised to have done exemplary work. But the City Council was looking for an excuse to replace him because of his unwillingness to accept that the aristocrats of Paridon were not answerable to the City Guard. The post of chief constable is traditionally held by a aristocrat who naturally and fully appreciates this nicity. As the murder cycle progressed Wortle nearly snapped under the pressure and was removed from office. Inspector Francine Maxwell was then named Acting Chief Constable.

The doppelgangers of Paridon constitute an immense challenge for the City Guard. No one, not even a fellow guardsman, is necessarily who he or she seems to be. Infiltration must be expected. Constables take their lives in their own hands every time they trust their fellows and their superiors. Inspectors jeopardise their investigations by sharing information and jeopardise their lives by acting as lone wolves. To the guard's credit corruption is not a problem, it takes its responsibilities seriously, and it employs modern methods. Chief among these is the employment of a coroner to perform autopsies.

City Guards are sent on patrol in groups of three.

Police stations are to be found in every borough, with the headquarters in the Bowels.

Since the discovery of the "Shadow Killers", guards now sport swords in addition to trucheons.

A City Guard sports dark blue coat, pants, and a bowler-styled helmet with a spike on its top and the insignia of Paridon shining on its front.

Officer's stripes appear on the shoulders of their uniforms, and every officer, no matter their rank, must sport their numbered badges upon their left breast.
