Clavius Kreel

On the outlander world of Eberron in the nation of Karrnath, Clavius Kreel was the head of a Karrnathi army program during the Last War to use defacers as undead assassins. They were potentially useful for preventing their targets from being subjects of speak with dead spells or resurrection. The program was deemed largely a failure and closed down when several military officers of the army were found with their faces removed. Clavius Kreel disappeared at about this time.[1]

Clavius Kreel was claimed by the Mists after using the defacers to murder the Karrnathi officers for unknown reasons. He eventually wound up in Darkon some time prior to the Requiem. There, Clavius presented several types of undead from his homeworld to Azalin Rex. Clavius stated he was a wizard and cleric of the Blood of Vol that had developed several new types of undead that might capture Azalin's interest, offering the bloodhulk, boneclaw, defacer, Karrnathi skeleton, and Karrnathi zombie as examples. Azalin has since referred to these new undead as important new directions for the war efforts against Falkovnia.[2]

The Clavius Kreel-Azalin Rex interaction was reported to Dr. Rudolph van Richten by Horace Grenville. According to rumors cited by Grenville, a "research facility" on the undead exists somewhere to the east of Karg. Unfortunately, Grenville was found murdered shortly after relating this information to Dr. van Richten. A "XXX" symbol was discovered at the scene of the crime.[3]

Behind the Curtain

Clavius Kreel is an NPC introduced in the 3rd Edition Monster Manual IV in the defacer monster entry adapting the creature to the Eberron campaign setting with no mention of Clavius Kreel coming to the Demiplane of Dread, only that he "disappeared".[1] A fan article in the Ravenloft netzine Quoth the Raven interprets his disappearance as an abduction by the Mists.[4]

The original canon material from the Monster Manual IV spelled Clavius Kreel with an R after the K in his last name. A fan article in the Quoth the Raven netzine mistakenly spelled his last name without the R. The former, canon name has been used in this Mistipedia article.
