Origin
A Devoratrix (plural: Devoratrices) is a strain of demon derived from Succubi by the Neutral Evil Faerûnian goddess Shar[1] to serve as inquisitors, spies and assassins among those spellcasters who use her Shadow Weave of magic.[2]
Current Sketch Outside the Demiplane of Dread
It is unknown how the Devoratrices on the Prime Material Plane and other locations outside the Demiplane of Dread fare in the wake of the Spellplague[3] and the collapse of the Shadow Weave that granted them power and purpose in the eyes of their spiteful goddess. It is known, however, that several Devoratrices had fled the Forgotten Realms for other worlds like Krynn, Mystara and Oerth before the Spellplague so they could be their own masters.
Original Purpose
During their heyday, Devoratrices were sent to infiltrate the lives of spellcasters who used the Shadow Weave, and gauge their loyalty to Shar. Those who were disloyal, they were meant to neutralize by feeding on their minds, draining their memories, and reeducating them into loyal servants of Shar. In reality, many Devoratrices chafed at being at Shar's beck and call, especially because she had isolated them from other Fiends by linking them to the Shadow Weave, and because mortals who knew what they were tended to fear them.
Symptomatic of the Devoratrices' isolation were their lack of the demonic ability to summon others of their kind, as well as their inability to reproduce with other Outsiders. Instead, Devoratrices could produce Half-Fiends with mortals, or else reproduce asexually once every 600 years, producing either a fellow Devoratrix (20% chance), or a standard Succubus (80% chance).
For all that they were Chaotic Evil, Devoratrices are known for having strong maternal instincts, and a capacity for building a positive relationship with their offspring. They were known to properly educate and provide for their children.
Known Devoratrices
Currently, two and possibly three Devoratrices are known to dwell in Ravenloft:
- The Red Haunt.
- Roe
- An unnamed third, who may or may not still be alive.
