Levels of Reality

Described in the Nightmare Lands: The Rules of Dreams and Nightmares, existence comprises at least four levels of reality, with increasing rank indicating an increasing level of how "real" a given place is. The levels are as follows:

  • Level 1 reflects the normal ephemeral and surreal nature of dreams and Dream Plane. Death in the dream plane only wakes the dreamer. Only the rare, especially vivid dream or nightmare can leave concrete lasting effects on dreaming characters.
  • Level 2 represents dreams and nightmares that have somehow established some degree of substance as temporary pocket dimensions known as dreamscapes. Traumas in dreamscapes can have long-lasting and drastic effects, though dreamscapes are always temporary save for the nightmarish prisons created by the Nightmare Court for their victims.
  • Level 3 represents the normal waking world
  • Level 4 represents Hyper-Reality, where everything is realer than real; all effects having more punch and causing more sensation than in Level 3.
  • Level 5 is only known to be a rumor, in that in the realms of some divine beings, reality can made to shift as the deity wills.
