Master Bralkain was a vampire. Formerly a member of the Kargat and a servant of Azalin, he later went on to become one of the Unholy Order of the Grave and a servant of Death. However, his ultimate goal was to use the Key to the Abyss to summon and bind a fiend, though this ultimately resulted gaining the dreadful attentions of the free-willed Whistling Fiend, initially in conjuring the Fiend from the Abyss and then drawing the Fiend's attention from elsewhere in the Demiplane of Dread almost two hundred years later.

History

Bralkain has served Azalin for 170 years as a member of the Kargat. In life, back in 580 BC, he led the team of wizards from Karg who accidentally created this artifact and thereby unleashed the Whistling Fiend upon the Land of Mists. After managing to close portal, the wizards were invited by Azalin Rex to Castle Avernus and where they were rewarded for their innovation and recklessness by being transformed into undead servants of their master.

Bralkain's presence at the Requiem persuaded him to switch his allegiance to Death. He became a member of the Unholy Order of the Grave and was put in charge of a mission to seek out and return to his new master useful magic items. Bralkain seized the Watchers' Stronghold to the end of taking possession of the Key to the Abyss. Bralkain's goal in retaking the possession of the key was not to give to Death. Rather he wished to summon a fiend and bind it to his service. He was foiled by the Whistling Fiend who remained linked to the device and returned to claim it, the wards on the stronghold having been broken by Bralkain.
