Voan Darl is a character from I, Strahd, The War Against Azalin; he appears in Strahd's in-character narrative that comprises much of the novel's text. In universe, Voan Darl was an assassin from Darkon. He was once a guest at Heather House, but he was banished from there after an honor duel resulted in the death of another Darkonian guest. Staying at an Mordentish inn, Voan Darl eked out a meager living as a gambler. He bore no love for Azalin Rex because of Azalin's execution of a woman he loved, which drew Strahd's attention when Lovina Wachter notified him.

Strahd ordered Lovina to hire Darl and his employees to serve Strahd's cause in the struggle against Azalin Rex. Voan proved highly useful in this regard, particularly as a spy. However when it came time to kidnap General Vychen in 581 BC, Strahd dominated Darl using a special combination of magical enchantments to make Darl act as a second set of eyes and ears for Strahd and a puppet that could go behind even Darl's normal limits.

Darl was not a loner; he had a small gang of assassins that worked beneath him. He also held a secret romance with Commander Resvalan, commander of the Barovian military at the time. Given how long ago he lived, Darl is most likely deceased in the modern Ravenloft timeline.
