Constructs are corporeal. They are animate, but they are not so naturally, they are artificial, creatures of artifice. They are not dead, they are not alive, and they are not undead. They do not eat, drink, or sleep. They are not mortal and are not immortal. They are not killed. Rather they are destructed. They are animate things.

Constructs, unlike outsiders, are not living incarnations of "ideals". Nor are they elementals, although it has been suggested that the animation of a golem entails effectively the binding of the spirit of an elemental. In the case of dread golems, born of dark desire rather than potent magic, an elemental or a magical motive force is more difficult to envision. Whatever the truth of the matter, constructs cannot be starved of energy and thereby destroyed.

Like dread golems, many constructs are the product of dark desire and as such are a curse called down upon their creator by herself or himself.
