Arkandale was a domain in the southern Core formed by an adventurous natural werewolf by the name of Nathan Timothy. Son of the notable Mordentish werewolf Eowin Timothy, Nathan was always compelled to wander. On some level, he seemed to believe that he might escape the Demiplane of Dread through his wanderings. Being a natural werewolf and raised as a monster, he left a trail of murders in his wake. When there was nowhere left to explore, he entered the Mists. They obliged him with a domain of his own: Arkandale[2]. The year was 708 BC[1].

Arkandale was riddled with small, sharp hills and thick forests. The land was abundant with game animals and wolves, and Arkandale was well known for the furs its settlements produced. These small villages were clustered around the Musarde River, which cut a broad swath across the domain[3]. Captain Nathan Timothy piloted his paddle boat, the Virago, up and down the river as a merchant[3]. In fact, his werewolf minions enforced a monopoly on safe travel and trade on the river through his domain[2]. The peasants knew of the exclusive safety of his ship, though they believed his ingenuity and fortune was the cause[3].

Nathan's curse was to be unable to leave the river for long, lest he begin entering a helpless, comatose state[4]. Unlike most darklords, Nathan learned to live with the curse, even coming to enjoy the river all the more. While he was not a good man, and was still a ruthless werewolf, his evils were no longer so dramatic or pervasive that he warranted a domain of his own. His son, Alfred, however, was indulging in worship of a Wolf God, and making ruthless sacrifices and decisions for no reason greater than his own sense of hatred and desire to be a monster[5]. Alfred became a darklord of his own domain, Verbrek located to the south of Arkandale, in 730 BC. In many ways, Verbrek's geography and culture mirrored that of Arkandale, though Verbrek would come to have a much higher population of werewolves[6].

When the Grand Conjunction (or Great Upheaval) finished, Verbrek absorbed Arkandale[7]. Nathan Timothy was released from his entrapment in a single domain, and remains captain of the Virago as of 755 Barovian Calendar[8]. His travels now take him all over the Core[6], and he is famous for providing a safe ride and gregarious company. Then again, no one would hear from anyone who disappeared on his ship. Although no longer bound to a single domain, Nathan Timothy's curse still binds him to the river. He may now travel the entirety of the navigable Musarde River and Arden River systems[7].

As for Arkandale itself, memory of its existence seems to have faded from the minds of the public. Mention and even description of Arkandale can be found in at least one written work: Catalogue of the World Entire[9].
