The Mountains of Misery
The Montes Infelices ("Mountains of Misery") dominate the landscape of southeastern Darkon and well beyond. Their foothills stretch to the west and north. Their southern foothills, the Forgotten Hills, tower over the plains of Nova Vaasa. Their claws reach into Tepest and a loner among them has claimed Keening for itself. The Vuchar River in Darkon and the Sydligdnar ("South Dnar River") in Nova Vaasa are their children.
The Mountains of Misery are anchored to the southeast by Mount Nyid and to the northwest by Mount Nirka. The pair are immense volcanes that laid within the land of Arak, Mount Nyid at its centre and Mount Nirka on its northern frontier with Darkon. They and their land were subsumed by Darkon as part of the Great Upheaval in 740 BC. Following the Requiem in 750 BC they rumbled back to life from presumed extinction. The pair used to be side by side, but they appear to have grown apart. Mount Nirka soars to a height of 7960 ft, easily surpassing Mount Baratak. Mount Nyid soars to an awe-inspring 9530 ft. Perhaps Mount Grysl and Mount Makab once rivaled Mount Nyid for the title of the highest peak in the Land of Mists. But they and the land of Bluetspur have vanished. All life on Mount Nyid and Mount Nirka and indeed across the face of Arak was eradicated in 588 BC by a sandstorm without precedent in an event recorded as the Scourge of Arak. A century and a half later the heart of the mountains remained a blasted, rocky wasteland, devoid of trees. At lower elevations tenacious grasses, spike plants, and low shrubs have made some inroads. As for fauna mundane and monstrous, it consists chiefly of vast swarms of bats, spiders of all sizes, and ettercaps. When completed, the Strigos Road will pass within sight of Mount Nirka to its south west and skirt the western flank of Mount Nyid, reopening the prior road that was also destroyed by the storm.
Mount Nirka is the source of the Amnis Lacrimarum ("River of Tears"), which traverses Keening before joining the Corvus River well to the west in Darkon. Ultimately, it is also the source of Lake Temporus, from which springs the Tempe River. The foothills to its northeast are the source of the Khourx River and the Foaming River. Mount Nyid is the source of the Dnar River.
The foothills of the Mountains of Misery are jagged. To the south they are called the Forgotten Hills.
Creatures abiding in the mountains and foothills include goblins, kobolds, darklings, and broken ones.
Gold, silver, and gems are mined and such mining is the primary activity. The dwarven settlement is Tempe Falls. The gnomish one is Mayvin.
