Mad is a gothic personality trait. It is applied in particular to madmen and in general to living creatures suffering from madness, which is to say to living creature whose loss of mental health compromises the soundness of their minds. Someone who is mad suffers from a captivity of the mind, with the capacity for thought or for action being qualitatively compromised such that behaviour becomes abnormal.
