An agent receives pay for accepting employment to act on the behalf of another. He or she agrees, striking a bargain and perhaps entering into a contract, to put the interests of a party ahead of his own interests in exchange receiving a salary or other benefit from that party. An agent is not free to pursue his or her own interests at the expense of the interests of that party.
